There is a great deal of misunderstanding about what 501(c)(3) organizations can and cannot do with regard to lobbying and advocacy. Many organizations simply avoid lobbying altogether for fear of jeopardizing funding or their nonprofit status.

501(c)(3) organizations may express their views through lobbying legislators and mobilizing their supporters, if done right. In fact, their voices are an invaluable part of the policy-making process and need to be heard.

Learn more from Melissa Scholz, owner of Scholz Nonprofit Law, about the basics of what qualifies as "lobbying" and what you can do, within the law, as a representative of a nonprofit.
